April Employment Law Update

It’s that time of year when you need to check your rates of pay against the increases to statutory pay and allowances. From 2nd and 6th April you will need to make sure that you are paying no less than the amounts below for national minimum wage, family leave and sickness absence.

National Minimum Wage

  • £10.42 for workers 23 years and over

  • £10.18 for workers aged either 21 or 22

  • £7.49 for workers aged 18 to 20

  • £5.28 for workers under 18 but on or above compulsory school age

  • £5.28 for apprentices under 19 or 19 or over if they are in the first year of their apprenticeship.

This change takes effect on 6th April.

Statutory pay for family leave

This covers payments made to employees whilst they are on maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental leave or parental bereavement leave.

The new weekly rate for this leave is £172.48 and this takes effect on 2nd April.

Statutory Sick Pay

The weekly rate for statutory sick pay rises to £109.40 from 6th April.
